Battle Island is situated on the outer edge of the Rossport group of islands and is the home of a lighthouse. Originally a 20 foot wooden structure built in 1877, the Battle Island Light was replaced in 1911 with a 43 foot concrete structure which sits 118 feet above the big lake. The light was built to guide ships into Wilson and Simpson Channels on their way to Nipigon Bay. Automated in 1991, it still operates today as a year round emergency light. In keeping with Superior's reputation, the Battle Island Light has been challenged by a number of severe storms over the years. In 1977, one such storm with persistent gale force winds pushed huge waves into the tower, breaking windows 116 feet above the lake.
